Melbourne Storm coach Craig Bellamy's words of praise seemed to embarrass Dally M Medal winner Jahrome Hughes.

As Bellamy accepted his fourth Dally M coach of the year award on Wednesday night, the 64-year-old explained how Storm halfback Hughes has made 2024 his best season to date.

Reminded of his halfback's stunning individual season, Bellamy said he had observed Hughes grow in confidence.

"Yes, he has [been good this season]. He's been great actually," he told Dally M host Yvonne Sampson.

"He's been great for a couple of years but I think really this year.

"He'll hate me saying this but I think he's got a real confidence about himself now, which he always had the ability to do that, but he probably didn't have that full confidence in himself to be able to do the job.

"All the players and the coaching staff — everyone at the club — knows what a talent he is and that he could do the job even though it took him a bit of time for him to realise.

"But it looks like he's found that confidence now and he's had one hell of a year."

"He's all embarrassed now. Look at him shaking his head," Bellamy laughed.

"Hopefully tonight will finish up good for him too."

And so it did with Hughes clinching the the 2024 Dally M Medal by one point over of Roosters rival James Tedesco.
