The Stanley Cup playoffs have come alive after a brutal altercation between Washington Capitals veteran Alex Ovechkin and Carolina Hurricanes teen Andrei Svechnikov.

Svechnikov, the second pick in the 2018 NHL draft, appeared to challenge Ovechkin to a fight before being knocked out by his countryman in an ugly scene.

Following three swift right-handed jabs from Ovechkin, Svechnikov was floored before being immediately tended to by the medical staff.

"He's directly in front of me. He's wobbly still. He can't get up right now," the commentator said.

"His hands are shaking from where I'm at. He's in a lot of trouble right now."

After the game, in which Svechnikov's Hurricanes ran out 5-0 winners, Ovechkin discussed the fight with reporters.

"First of all I hope he is okay," Ovechkin told reporters.

"I'm not a big fighter. He's the same. He asked me to fight. You don't want to see a guy get hurt."
