'Doesn't want to talk to me': Christchurch pit lane stoush after Supercars champions make contact during race

Brodie Kostecki and Chaz Mostert cut unhappy figures in the Supercars paddock on Sunday after the two champions tangled in the latter stages of the final Christchurch race.

The two were seen passionately discussing their incident in pit lane before the reigning champ was slapped with a 30-second penalty and took the blame.

Broc Feeney was handed the Jason Richards Memorial Trophy off the back of Ryan Wood's heartbreaking retirement - the young Kiwi's Supra stopping abruptly with seven laps to go.

With Woods' untimely retirement, Kostecki found himself suddenly in the fight for the trophy, with only Mostert blocking his path to glory.

The DJR driver dove up the inside of Mostert and the two touched wheels, leaving Kostecki to fly around the infield grass on a joyride.

Kostecki was visibly furious at the incident, but gave a very reserved interview about his side of the story.

"It was just an interesting thing, I seem to have a real issue with that corner and being in the dust," he said.

"That's how it goes, the officials have made their call on the penalty, and that's about it. I don't really have much to add.

"I actually got a fair way up the inside, I think he saw that I was coming pretty late and tried to turn in, but I was already up a fair way.

"So that put me up onto the grass there, and I didn't run him off the road on exit or anything, I gave him a car [width]. I'm not about that.

"And then the rest happened...I'm glad I didn't take out any other cars obviously, and I believe there's a flag post there as well, so glad nothing serious happened.

"That's the way it goes sometimes, sometimes you're the bug, and sometimes you're the windscreen."

Mostert was promptly handed a 30-second penalty by the stewards and expressed his disappointment in Toyota's woeful end to the weekend, with both drivers ruled out of the race.

"First of all, not the outcome I wanted from that," Mostert continued.

"Brodie was pretty adventurous down there at (turn) two and bowled me wide, so I let him know I was pretty upset, but that wasn't my intention for sure.

"We made wheel-to-wheel contact, and it just spat me sideways, and then the last one whiplashed Brodie off, so not ideal.

"I'm trying to find him, but I'm pretty sure he probably doesn't want to talk to me right now."

The two heavyweights did find each other in pit lane, reports saying the two hashed it out but did not come to an agreement.

"I spoke to Brodie," Mostert said to Speedcafe.

"I said I was sorry about the outcome, for sure, but I don't know… It didn't really sound like we got anywhere.

"But anyway, that's the way it is."

Although he didn't win any races on New Zealand soil, Feeney's consistency handed him the Jason Richards Memorial trophy and the top place in the championship standings going into Tasmania.

The Triple Eight driver expressed remorse for his Kiwi competitor missing out on the victory for an issue out of his hands.

It seemed the 23-year-old has put the bad blood of last year's Adelaide Grand Final debacle behind him.

"There's highs and lows. Sometimes you need things to go your way," Feeney said.

"Obviously it's not good seeing a competitor sitting on the side when they did a lot of good things over the last couple of weeks.

"Unfortunate for him, what went wrong. I've obviously been through something extremely similar, for the championship, however."

Wood sought out Feeney after the race, the two shaking hands.

"I've been in that situation. Seeing him pulled up on the side… we've obviously had our differences over the past six months but he's put together a great couple of weeks," continued Feeney.

"Look, I've obviously had plenty of bad luck go my way.

"I lost the big trophy last year in kind of similar circumstances, so obviously gutted for him."
