Macarthur Bulls assistant coach hit with six-match ban after ugly encounter

Macarthur Bulls assistant coach Christophe Gamel has been whacked with a six-match ban for his involvement in a melee following the side's 2-1 defeat to the Newcastle Jets.

Gamel was originally given a two-game ban by the match review panel but awaited confirmation of the final sanction from the disciplinary and ethics committee.

The committee confirmed Gamel's absence from his side's matches against Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory would be counted as time served for the ban.

A heated exchange between Dane Ingham and Marin Jakolis saw tensions boil over as players rushed in following the full-time whistle in round two.

Ingham, a right back for the Jets, was seen pointing his finger in his rival's face before Macarthur team officials attempted to break apart the players.

It is unclear what was said in the heated exchange.

"There is a bit of a [debate] happening between the pair and it's not looking too friendly," Simon Hill said on Paramount +.

"It is all threatening to boil over which is rather unfortunate.

"The ball is blunted. This could get ugly. "

Gamel was seen rushing to the brawl by match officials, who spotted the Frenchman shoving a Newcastle player while others attempted to diffuse the tension.

The act did not go without punishment as the referee raised his arm and hit Gamel with a red card.

The melee quickly calmed down following the red card.

An investigation into the referee's decision by the match review panel deemed Gamel had committed an offence of "assault including physical and aggressive behaviour" to an individual on the field.

Macarthur are scheduled to face Sydney FC at Allianz Stadium on Sunday, November 10.
