Jordan strike first in San Francisco
Jordan have taken a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute of their Group J clash with Algeria in San Francisco.
Nizar Al-Rashdan slotted the ball past goalkeeper Luca Zidane - Zinedine’s son - after teammate Musa Al-Taamari’s badly miscued strike fell fortuitously for him.
Jordan lost their World Cup opener 3-1 to Austria while Lionel Messi torched Algeria with a hat-trick in Argentina’s 3-0 win.
Kiwi fans fume after this weird ordeal
New Zealand’s Ben Old feared he had suffered a gruesome injury in yesterday’s 3-1 loss to Egypt.
All Whites fans were fuming after Mohamed Salah’s go-ahead goal came after Old appeared to have been clearly fouled by Yasser Ibrahim moments earlier.
Old had a classically Kiwi recollection of his ordeal in a painful double blow.
“I’ve touched the ball and I feel like he’s fouled me. As he’s gone to fall down, he’s fallen down on my ball sack and ripped my shorts and underwear,” Old said.
“I was worried because it was a really sharp pain, but it’s all fine, I’ve been checked by the doctor.”

Mahrez starts as captain for Algeria, two changes for Jordan
Algeria brought forward Riyad Mahrez back into the starting lineup as captain for their World Cup Group J match against Jordan, who made two changes.
World Cup debutants Jordan will be eliminated if they lose to Algeria in the match at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium (kickoff 1pm AEST)
Former Manchester City player Mahrez will make his first start of this World Cup after being on the bench in the opening defeat by Argentina.

He takes over the captaincy from Aissa Mandi.
Algeria have also brought Ramiz Zerrouki into the midfield.
Jordan coach Jamal Sellami has kept faith with attackers Ali Olwan, who scored their first-ever World Cup goal in the game against Austria, and Mousa Al-Tamari.
Jordan have also brought Hossam Abu Al-Dahab into defence, while Mahmoud Al Mardi comes in up front.
Jordan: Yazeed Abu Laila, Abdullah Nasib, Hossam Abu Al-Dahab, Yazan Al-Arab, Noor Al-Rawabdeh, Ali Olwan, Mousa Al-Tamari, Mahmoud Al Mardi, Muhannad Abu Taha, Nizar Al-Rashdan, Ehsan Haddad

Has the GOAT debate ended?
Is Messi the GOAT – the greatest of all time – or is Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo?
It’s a debate that’s raged for the best part of two decades – but Socceroos great Harry Kewell believes Messi has settled the argument.
“I’m baffled how he’s got five goals already in the tournament,” Kewell said on SBS.
“Goals in the World Cup are so rare and special, and he’s already got five. It’s amazing, and credit where credit’s due.
“I know the debate about the best players and who’s the greatest, but I just don’t think you can argue against it anymore [that Messi is the GOAT].”

What an ending!
Senegal tried everything they could to level up the scores before full-time but fell narrowly short. Norway are over the moon to see a 3-2 win as the final result.
Norway’s manager Ståle Solbakken has run straight up into the stands to celebrate with his family. His players are catching their breath on the field.
Norway are through to the round of 32. Senegal will be left to hope that they are one of the lucky teams who finish third that will advance to the next stage.
Norway briefly left down a man
Senegal are not having it with Norway’s Marcus Holmgren Pedersen.
He went down with what appears to be a nasty leg cramp, needing the assistance of three teammates to get back to his feet.
The referee has alerted him he must move to the sideline and leave his teammates down a man while Senegal take the corner.
Erling Haaland is fuming at his teammate, rightly so. Luckily, Norway was able to clear the ball out of the box and prevent a goal.

Seattle: The United States have started the World Cup impressively as the expectation around what manager Mauricio Pochettino and this group of players can achieve continues to grow.
The scenes in Seattle after the US swatted aside a disappointing Socceroos outfit were one of togetherness and belief around a team which is inspiring a country to dream.
