'Not good Test match cricket': Mark Taylor joins chorus of frustrated experts after chaotic first day of the Boxing Day Test

Former Australian captain Mark Taylor has joined the chorus of disappointment around the 20 wickets falling on Boxing Day amid frustration at the MCG curators.

As batters continued to get out during the fourth Ashes Test, the anger grew across commentary boxes at the ground before Australia had to bat twice in a rare scene.

Michael Vaughan described the pitch as a "shocker" on Fox Cricket while Darren Lehmann said on the ABC it was worse than Perth.

Perth's pitch offered up two days of cricket and it looks like Melbourne could be headed the same way, although Taylor is hopeful for a change in circumstance.

"Hopefully tomorrow (Saturday) it does flatten out a bit and we see Australia bat well because we don't want to see another two-day Test match," he said on 2GB's Wide World of Sports Radio following the close of play.

"As much as it's entertaining for the people there for two days, there's too many people that want to see good Test match cricket.

"At the moment this is not good Test match cricket, this is a 'it's fun Test match cricket' but it's not really good. The balance between the bat and ball is not right and Test cricket is at its best when it is right."

How the home side approach day two will be interesting considering the success of aggressive batting.

Harry Brook attempted to hit Mitchell Starc over cover for six with his first ball when it was 3-8, much to the shock of experts.

"Has nothing that's been said over these last few weeks gone in at all? This is the vice-captain," Jonathan Agnew said on BBC's Test Match Special.

Ultimately, the ultra-aggressive Brook was the top-scorer with 41 off 34 balls. Michael Neser was next, hitting 35 off 49 for Australia.

Usman Khawaja chipped in with 29 off 52 and Gus Atkinson scored valuable runs at the bottom with 28 off 35.

Taylor believes it will be up to every player to do it their own way.

"I think you've got to come up with your own game plan. We saw Harry Brook today who just decided to go all-out attack, go hard, and he made 40-odd," he said.

"He could've easily made nought and looked very silly doing it but he went the aggressive rout.

"The funny thing was the first six overs I think Australia were 0-27 and it was looking OK. As the day went on ... it (the pitch) actually seemed to do more the game went on and generally it's the other way around.

"... It's up to the Australian batters to think how's the best way I can maximise my time out there?"
