Australian star Cameron Green slammed for 'pre-determined rubbish' as Test spot in jeopardy

Cameron Green is under pressure to keep his spot in Australia's side after a series of ugly dismissals in the Boxing Day Test.

Green has been the victim of a rotating batting order having featured at No.3 in the West Indies before he was shifted to No.5 at the start of the series against England.

The all-rounder was then shifted to No.7 for Boxing Day after Josh Inglis dropped out and Usman Khawaja retained his place in the middle-order.

Green has scored 109 runs at 21.8 this summer but what would disappoint him the most is his modes of dismissals, particularly after making starts in Melbourne.

In the second innings Green charged down the wicket and guided a Ben Stokes delivery to Harry Brook in the slips, walking off for 19 at 7-119.

Simon Katich was highly critical at the time.

"I know what they're trying to do, they're trying to put the bowler off that good length, but you are making a decision before you even know what length the ball is being bowled," he said on Channel Seven.

"It's pre-determined rubbish. Watch the ball and play it instinctively off the track."

Green was also horrendously run out in the first innings by Brydon Carse off the fast bowler's own bowling. He had made a start then too with 17.

Despite the 26-year-old's performances with the bat, what could keep him in the team is his output with the ball and in the field. However, Beau Webster has been in every squad for the four Tests and is the man who could replace him at the SCG.

After the run out, Mark Taylor admitted his belief there's a confidence issue for Green.

"He's a talent, there's no doubt about that and he's shown us at various times in his Test career that he can produce with bat and ball and he's a brilliant fielder also," the former Australian captain said on 2GB's Wide World of Sports Radio.

"But in this game you've got to keep performing, that's the bottom line and at the moment this hasn't been a great series for him so far.

"His two best opportunities have been at the Gabba when he made 45 and then backed away because he thought he was going to get a short ball and the bowler ended up targeting the stumps and he got bowled which was not a great looking dismissal.

"And then (day one), he looked as good as anyone on a pitch which was doing plenty and then runs himself out, there's a nervousness in there you sense with Cameron Green. The belief is not quite there, he needs a good amount of time against a quality opposition to be the man, not so much to keep us happy but to settle his own mind."

England great Nasser Hussain also said Green is a talent who "really frustrates me".

"I do think there's an exceptional cricketer in there with his batting, bowling and fielding but he gets out in some really soft ways; run out in the first innings and a half charge, half not charge fend off to slip today," he said on the Sky Sports Cricket podcast.

Green has now played 36 Test matches since bursting onto the scene five years ago, averaging 32.25 with the bat and 36.68 with the ball.
