'Take accountability': Matthew Hayden puts heat on Australian batting coach after Boxing Day disaster

Matthew Hayden has taken a whack at Australia's batting coach Michael Di Venuto after the lacklustre performance at the Boxing Day Test.

The former opener said he's "not a fan" of di Venuto as a coach and called for change in the system.

Australia's batting has been put under the microscope following the fourth Test with the likes of Jake Weatherald, Marnus Labuschagne and Cameron Green all struggling for runs.

Hayden did concede the MCG pitch was a "substandard wicket" on the All Over Bar The Cricket podcast but signalled out Di Venuto for specific criticism.

"That's an unacceptable scorecard. I don't care if it was 50 millimetres of grass. They need to be better than that," he said.

"(Travis) Head, Weatherald, Labuschagne, (Usman) Khawaja, (Alex) Carey, Green; they're all at sea with their basic techniques. The only technical thing I see is coming from our bowlers, who look more technically sound than our batters. Now why is that?

"The faceless man in this cricket team is always an issue. Michael Di Venuto has been there at least five years. Assuming we're going to have on scale change in our batting lineup ... on the whole we're going to have generational change, we need some generationally different voices in that mentality of how you play."

In reply on the podcast, host James Brayshaw made note that he, Greg Blewett and Hayden were fans of di Venuto, but the Queenslander took exception to that.

"I'm not a fan of him. It's not a personal thing," Hayden said.

"I just think for too long there has been an influence in this group around batting, and I don't feel it's served the development of the team or the technical element of Test cricket. Not just on green wickets but in the subcontinent, where we've been competitive but haven't had the skill sets required to cope in those conditions.

"As much as I like 'Diva', I feel like there has to be some change, because I don't want to be sitting here on this podcast in two years going, 'Well we've got all these technical difficulties'.

"It's nothing personal against Diva but at some point, you have to take accountability. That's the piece I really struggle with the most. It's like, 'Yep, it's green, therefore we're going to play a certain way'. Or, 'It's spinning', I remember in Delhi a couple of series ago, every player was sweeping on a wicket that wasn't turning an inch."

Labuschagne has been one of the biggest talking points following the MCG nightmare, mainly due to the modes of dismissal where he is once again nicking balls outside off stump.

The right-hander was caught by Joe Root off Josh Tongue's bowling on both occasions at the MCG.

Hayden said he's "tired of talking about Marnus Labuschagne and his technique" before comparing it to Virat Kohli last summer who was consistently playing at deliveries outside off stump.

"It's a no-go zone," he said.

The 54-year-old also said Green is "not getting technical advice for a player of his standard" and pointed to a continuing trend of players being out of form for a long time.

While there has been concern over the form of players, News Corp is reporting the Australian squad will be unchanged for the SCG.
