The Ashes second Test day one AS IT HAPPENED: Archer slogging flips momentum England's way in the final moments

BRISBANE: Joe Root has ended his long wait for an Ashes ton in Australia and in turn saved England from another awful total.

Root passed the milestone late on day one at the Gabba, after only just expressing his belief on Sunday that there shouldn't be day-night cricket in The Ashes.

The right-hander had to dig deep as wickets fell around him, particularly a momentum shifting run out from Josh Inglis in the final session.

Jofra Archer's quick-fire 32 off 26 balls has really changed the momentum of this Test match.

If he goes cheaply or if England declares (without taking a wicket or two), Australia would feel much better heading into the change rooms.

He brought Joe Root along with him, who hit a six and accelerated to 135 himself.

Now they will come out to bat tomorrow afternoon and add more to this total. It's not like time is their enemy either.

England's day at the Gabba. Just.

Talk about swings and roundabouts. England puts on 61 runs after losing its ninth wicket to take all of the momentum into day two. Jofra Archer brilliant with 32 off 26 balls. Joe Root the star with 135 not out.

England finish the day 9/325 and can add to their total tomorrow as well.

Mitchell Starc starred with the ball, taking six wickets, but looked sore and sorry by the end of his final spell.

Australia just needed that last wicket to feel really good about their evening, but they tried to play funny buggers and avoid batting under lights, and that might have cost them 61 runs.

Archer and Root have slogged a 50-run partnership out of nowhere while everyone was deliberating about whether they should declare and Australia was wasting time trying to avoid batting tonight.

Now England has flown passed 315 and flipped the momentum of this game once again.

Archer has two sixes, Root has one. This has been a remarkable partnership. England absolutely justified in their decision not to declare now.

Maybe England just wants to make as many runs as possible and they're not worried about declaring.

He's smashed two sixes off Scott Boland in an over and raced to 17 runs. Could be crucial to the overall result.

England 9/292. 19 runs from the over off Boland. Maybe Australia should have been less focused on stall tactics and more worried about getting this 10th wicket.

The commentators seem baffled as to why England hasn't declared in the last 15 minutes. They've cost themselves a chance to bowl at the Aussies tonight.

David Warner can't believe it.

"It makes no sense," says David Warner.

"I'm baffled here. Absolutely baffled. Statistics say it is the hardest time to bat under these lights.

"Would Jofra Archer not want that ball now rather than in the beaming sun tomorrow?"

Adam Gilchrist agreed, adding: "I think they've missed a trick here England."

Australia has played it slowly and it's cost them a few runs, but they likely won't have to bat tonight at this point.

The Aussies have slowed things right down here. Steve Smith moving the field around and chatting to the bowlers.

They absolutely do not want to face a handful of overs tonight if they snare this last wicket soon. Things moving very slowly.

Which is a little hard to swallow considering we have only had 68 of 90 overs so far tonight. They are well below the required over rate, so this is a bit rich from the Aussies.

BRISBANE: Mitchell Starc's incredible Ashes series lives on.

He nibbled at the edge of Brydon Carse's bat with Alex Carey diving for another brilliant catch.

Now the question is, should Ben Stokes declare?

Alex Carey has taken an unbelievable diving catch running full speed with Marnus Labuschagne running alongside him.

Gus Atkinson sent it into the sky and Carey tracked it down beautifully.

That's five wickets for Mitchell Starc. England 8/264. They might just be bowling tonight.
