Good evening

Emily Patterson

That concludes Wide World of Sports' LIVE coverage of day one of the first Ashes Test.

It was a day rich in drama and momentum swings, proving that this rivalry delivers like no other.

If day one is anything to go by, we are in for a classic series.

Join us tomorrow for what promises to be an absolute thriller on day two!

Khawaja blunder adds to 19-wicket Ashes chaos

PERTH: Usman Khawaja's constant departures from the field for Australia caused havoc for the batting lineup after he was unable to open on day one of the first Ashes Test.

Khawaja's final disappearance ended when he returned after Brydon Carse was dismissed. The 38-year-old showed no signs of limping or discomfort and walked out calmly.

England only lasted one more over, with Jamie Smith and Mark Wood both departing. Khawaja did not rush off while Jake Weatherald and Marnus Labuschagne did, and alas, he didn't open.

Stumps

Emily Patterson

That's officially stumps on day one of the Ashes, and if you haven't caught your breath yet, join the club.

This was less a day of cricket and more a 19-wicket demolition derby at Optus Stadium.

Australia trails by 49 runs with one wicket in hand.

One more scalp for England in the morning, and they can smell a first-innings lead they had no right to expect.

Game on? You bet your life it is.

PERTH: The final over has been bowled by Jofra Archer and that's it today.

What a shocking display of batting from both sides.

Some great bowling but some really dumb shots as well.

The final delivery was nudged for two from Nathan Lyon and it's 9-123 at stumps.

Decision pending...

Lachlan Harper

PERTH: Ben Stokes could have another wicket here.

Scott Boland edged him into the slips and the only question is if it carried.

The third umpire takes a look at it and it's ruled Harry Brook has caught it on the full.

Boland goes for a duck and Australia is 9-121. Will this Test last two days?

Well that is just ridiculous

Lachlan Harper

PERTH: Two balls ago Ben Stokes moved his third man finer.

FIrst ball he bowled full. Second ball he bowled shorter, and Carey guided it straight down the throat of third man.

"He's fallen for it," Adam Gilchrist said on Fox Cricket.

"It's trouble, big, big trouble for Australia."

Mark Waugh added: "I can't believe it, 10 minutes before stumps."

Well this is dreadful batting, really.

Carey goes for 26 and Australia is 8-121.

Replays show he whacked the back of his bat after hitting it too. He knew it was an awful mistake.

Another one bites the dust

Lachlan Harper

PERTH: Well that won't go down as Mitchell Starc's best shot.

Ben Stokes pitched it up and he tried to go over his head.

Instead he hit it straight down down mid on's throat.

He's gone for 10. Someone just needs to stay out there with Carey.

All the pitch or poor batting?

Are we even?

PERTH: England faced 32.5 overs.

Now Australia have faced the same. And the fifth ball came with Mitch Starc tucking it down to fine leg.

Australia are 6-96.

So who's in front? You'd have to say England at the moment with a lead of 76 runs.

Stokes does it again!

Lachlan Harper

PERTH: Ben Stokes is the man!

He does time and time again, now Cameron Green is on his way for 24.

The all-rounder fought so hard in that innings but is brought undone by a ball that was just a touch too short to drive.

He nicked it behind and that's two wickets for Stokes.

Just before that ball he brought mid-off and mid-on straighter, and definitely managed to grab some space in Green's head.

"A hammer blow for Australia," Mike Hussey said on Fox Cricket.
