Scott Boland's career-best figures in vain as Victoria lose 5-31 in loss against NSW

Scott Boland has continued his love affair with the SCG, taking career-best figures in the Sheffield Shield clash between Victoria and NSW.

The veteran seamer was on fire in the first innings, taking 4-56 against the Blues, before backing it up with a haul of 6-46 in the second.

Boland finished with match figures of 10-102, which is the best of his first-class career and will help mount a case for selection in June's World Test Championship final.

His previous best came in the recent Test series against India at the same venue.

Among the victims was Sam Konstas, who was dismissed by Boland in both knocks, as well as Ollie Davies, Jack Edwards and Kurtis Patterson.

Konstas copped plenty of criticism for his performance earlier in the week, where he was knocked over by Boland for 10 off 7 deliveries playing an ugly hack shot.

The teenager tempered things in his second attempt, but managed just 17 off 44 balls before snicking off to his Test teammate.

The 36-year-old Boland helped the visitors roll NSW for 174 in their second innings, setting the Vics a tough total of 231 to win the Shield clash.

However, his efforts were all in vain as the Victorian batters failed to deliver.

Things got off to an incredibly rocky start in the run chase, losing 5-31 as the likes of Marcus Harris and Peter Handscomb were both dismissed cheaply.

Test spinner Todd Murphy blasted an unbeaten 40 off 32 balls coming in at the tail-end, but the side ultimately fell by 76 runs against NSW.

Jackson Bird (5-68) and Jack Edwards (3-28) did most of the damage with the ball.

The win moves NSW off the bottom of the Shield ladder, while also widening the gap for Victoria near the top, as they now sit seven points behind South Australia.
