Tassie ices out inaugural VFL captain after pub incident
Tasmania’s inaugural VFL captain Robbie Fox will not be offered a playing contract with the Devils for 2027, after the 33-year-old fell short of the club’s “behaviour expectations”.
Fox led the Devils during their debut VFL campaign in 2026 and was expected to be part of Tasmania’s inaugural AFL squad in the team’s first season in the top flight in 2028.

However, the club has now taken disciplinary action after he was reportedly removed from the premises of a Hobart pub because of drunk and disorderly conduct.
“This decision follows consideration of a range of factors including the future direction of our football program as we continue to prioritise the development of emerging talent,” the Devils said in a statement.
“The club’s expectations regarding player behaviour and adherence to our standards were also considered as part of this decision.”
Fox was Tassie’s first ex-AFL signing, coming to the club from the Sydney Swans in 2025 after the 33-year-old was delisted.
The Tasmanian joined the club after playing 105 AFL games with the Swans between 2017 and 2025.
The contract news comes as the Devils announced on Tuesday that they had offered one-year deals for Nick Williams, Zach Adams, Harry Elmer and Maddox Iverach.
