'Bit rattled by that innings': Questions over Sam Konstas after Test rookie falls cheaply again

Sam Konstas was bowled for 10 in his bid to regain selection for the World Test Championship final amid a chaotic start to a Sheffield Shield match in Sydney on Tuesday.

The 19-year-old Test rookie had his stumps rattled when he tried unsuccessfully to heave a Scott Boland delivery through the leg-side in the third over of NSW's clash with Victoria at the SCG.

Konstas and fellow NSW opener Nic Maddinson had attacked the early overs with flare and aggression, pulling out lap shots and walking down the wicket to Boland and fellow opening quick Fergus O'Neill.

Konstas survived an lbw shout after failing to connect while attempting a lap shot, before Maddinson got off the mark with an outside edge that squirted through the cordon.

Victoria conceded 30 runs, including four fours and two sixes, from the first two overs alone.

But both NSW openers were back in the pavilion come the 14th over after Maddinson holed out to a fielder at deep midwicket, departing for 33 from 27 balls as paceman Mitchell Perry struck.

No.5 Ollie Davies top-scored for NSW in a knock of 89 from 94 balls as the Blues posted 238 all out.

The Victorians were then 4-92 at stumps on the first day with former Test opener Marcus Harris not out on 33.

Konstas is hoping to win back his spot in the Australian XI for June's World Test Championship final to be played against South Africa at Lord's.

After playing another two Sheffield Shield matches for NSW, as well as a third if the Blues reach the final, Konstas will likely head to England to play county cricket.

But the way in which Konstas was dismissed on Tuesday, and the gung-ho nature of many of his recent innings, have cast doubt over whether he will be recalled for the World Test Championship final.

Respected sports broadcaster Gerard Whateley was critical of Konstas after Tuesday's innings.

"He may be scrambled, but he played with such predetermined aggression that I think you're entitled to read these seven balls at face value. That's exactly what he went out there to do," Whateley said on SEN radio.

"That's not going to, I don't think, be long-term successful in Test cricket.

"He's 19, but he is the incumbent Australian opener. So, you have to measure both."

Whateley added that he hoped Konstas would be "successful", but admitted he could not see him being successful "playing like that".

"... If he plays the rest of the Shield season like that, does he open at the World Test Championship [final]? I don't know the answer to that." Whateley said.

"I just had him as a lock [previously] … I'm a bit rattled by that innings."

Konstas' knock of 60 from 65 balls on his Test debut, which featured lap shots against the bowling of scintillating Indian quick Jasprit Bumrah, had a packed MCG crowd and millions of TV viewers stunned.

The young gun from Sydney's south produced scores of 60, 8, 23 and 22 across the final two Tests of the recent Border-Gavaskar series.

But he lost his spot on the tour of Sri Lanka with selectors pushing Travis Head to the top of the order and blooding Josh Inglis in the middle order.
