Dermott Brereton

AFL star Dermott Brereton was one of Shane Warne's earliest heroes.

Growing up, Warne wanted to play AFL, and as a teenager turned out for the St Kilda reserves.

He wore the same No.23 made famous by Brereton, who was a five-time premiership winner with Hawthorn during a glittering career that spanned more than a decade.

"Dermie was his idol," Warne's St Kilda under-19's coach Darryl Nisbet told The Age.

Warne kept the No.23 when cricket introduced numbers during the 1990s, an on his retirement from the game handed it over to close friend Michael Clarke.
