Australia's coach Andrew McDonald has declared Mitch Marsh's international future isn't over despite him being ruled out of the Champions Trophy with a serious injury.

The setback for Marsh comes after he was dropped from the Test side for the SCG last month.

News of Marsh's back injury broke on Friday, ruling him out for the ODI tournament in Pakistan and the UAE.

The Cricket Australia statement revealed his injury hadn't responded well to rehabilitation.

Despite Marsh's poor form before the setback, McDonald was defiant in his support of the West Australian.

"We feel as though he's got a future ahead," he told reporters after Australia's win over Sri Lanka.

"He's got some challenges at present, I'm not entirely sure what the injury is ... it's unfortunate to see him ruled out of the Champions Trophy.

"He'll be a part of this group moving forward, he's got plenty left."

As for Marsh's replacement in the Champions Trophy, McDonald wasn't willing to divulge many secrets.

However he did confirm Beau Webster, the man who replaced Marsh in the Test squad, "would be a chance".

"He'd be in the conversation for that. We've got Aaron Hardie as well, Marcus Stoinis is in the squad also," he said.

"... Beau Webster will be a chance there. He's in the picture."
