Alyssa Healy has been ruled out of Australia's upcoming T20 series against New Zealand to recover from the foot injury she suffered during the Ashes.

Healy was absent for all three T20 matches against England but was cleared to take part in the red-ball fixture.

The 34-year-old had injured her plantar fascia in the lead-up to the series but featured in the opening three ODIs before developing mid-foot soreness on the same side.

The injury forced Healy to train with a moon boot on as she raced the clock to be fit for the historic Test at the MCG.

The skipper was not named in the 14-player Australian squad on Wednesday, which will face the reigning T20 world champions in three matches from from 21-26 March.

Healy joins husband Mitchell Strac on the sidelines after the left-arm quick was ruled out of Australia's ODI series against Sri Lanka and the side's Champions Trophy campaign because of "personal reasons".

In the absence of Healy, Victorian wicketkeeper and right-hand batter Nicole Faltum has been named in her first national side.

Faltum has featured in the last eight editions of the WBBL. She was traded from the Melbourne Stars to the title-winning Melbourne Renegades ahead of WBBL|10.

Having represented Victoria at all pathway levels and Australia A on several occasions, Faltum leadership potential was recently on show when she led the Governor-General's XI against England in January.

National selectors also named Tahlia McGrath as captain for the series with Ashleigh Gardner her deputy.

"It's exciting to be able to bring Nicole into the squad, she's been a consistent performer over a long period of time and will provide a strong back-up option to Beth (Mooney) who will take the gloves during the series," Cricket Australia's head of performance Shawn Flegler said in a statement.

"While Beth was brilliant during the Ashes in Alyssa's absence, it's important we're continuing to look to the future and Nicole is certainly someone who we can see wearing the green and gold for a long period of time.

"Alyssa is unavailable for this series due to the foot injury she sustained during the Ashes. She's working diligently on her rehab with the aim to have her fit for the one-day World Cup later in the year.

"These three matches against New Zealand will be another good test as to how the side has bounced back after the T20 World Cup; the team performed strongly during the Ashes and will be looking to build on that against the World Champions."

Healy has also withdrawn from the Women's Premier League and has remained coy about her future in international cricket beyond the ODI World Cup.
