Cameron Bancroft's awful start to Shield season presents glaring dilemma for Aussie selectors

In the last two seasons of the Sheffield Shield, Cameron Bancroft has dominated.

But this season, with an Australian opening spot on the line, he's slid back to the pack, unable to grab it with both hands.

In round one, as Marcus Harris and Sam Konstas scored tons, Bancroft started the season with a pair.

The next match against Tasmania, he finished with eight and two.

Against Queensland, Bancroft's dismissals were identical. Caught behind off Michael Neser, feathering balls on off stump.

Then against Tasmania, those two dismissals may have been in his mind. He played at a shorter delivery outside off stump he probably could have left and it was the same result.

His second dismissal you could argue was unlucky. Riley Meredith dropped it short, Bancroft hooked but found Kieran Elliott at backward square, who took a sensational diving catch.

Despite the disappointment for Western Australia's best batter, they went on to win by six wickets. Josh Inglis was the star with his 101 in the first innings.

With Steve Smith moving back to four, many would've thought Bancroft was a shoo-in for the opener's spot if he scored runs.

It's no longer that simple. No one is grabbing the position by the throat.

Konstas scored two and 43 against Victoria, and received a working over from the high class Scott Boland. In the same match, Harris was unable to reach the heights of round one.

Victoria went on to win that match by 141 runs despite the Blues boasting a side that included Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon.

Meanwhile, Matthew Renshaw hasn't set the world on fire. There's been scores of six, 15, two and 21 from him.

In the Bulls' match with South Australia, there was one opener starring.

Henry Hunt, who's sat on the edges in the discussion for a future Aussie spot, scored 136 in the first innings. But he couldn't back it up, and was out for a golden duck the next innings.

Nathan McSweeney, who has been touted as a future No.3 for Australia, scored 37 and 72.
