'Wasn't up to the standard': Marnus Labuschagne's candid reflection following ODI second chance

Cricket star Marnus Labuschagne has revealed his one-day form "wasn't up to standard" as he prepares to make the most of a second chance in the format.

Labuschagne was originally left out of the ODI squad to tour South Africa, but has since been recalled due to Steve Smith's wrist injury.

Leading into the ODI series, the middle order batsman has averaged 24.93 with the bat since the start of 2022.

Speaking to Fox Cricket, Labuschagne was candid in his reflection on the original non-selection.

"I had to look at my one-day performance, and it wasn't up to the standard that I uphold," he said.

"I've got no doubt that I'm still the right person for Australia to bat in that middle order, but at the end of the day, you have to show it with performances, and hopefully South Africa can be an opportunity for me to show that.

"It's still all about the team, it's not just about my selection. It's about starting to play really good one-day cricket for Australia, starting to put really good performances together as a team."

With only one ODI hundred to his name in 30 appearances, Labuschagne admitted he hasn't made the No.4 spot his own.

"I think I've had a fair few opportunities to sort of stamp down that authority at No.4, and I haven't taken the opportunity," he said.

"Hopefully in the next few games I can do that … I certainly want to be a bit more proactive than I have been in previous times."

Australia's first ODI against South Africa will be on September 7 with the World Cup starting on October 5 in India.
