New Zealand batter Will Young has taken a remarkable outfield catch on day four of the second Test against South Africa in Christchurch.

Fielding at deep mid-wicket with Colin de Grandhomme bowling to Marco Jansen, Young had to make ground to his left, before throwing out the left hand in desperation as it appeared the ball had gone past him.

Somehow the catch stuck as Young fell to the ground, sending a stunned Jansen on his way.

"He can't believe it, neither can his teammates, where has that come from?" said Craig McMillan on commentary.

"That is sensational work," added Stephen Fleming.

"It just hung there, Will Young has just plucked that out of nowhere.

"What a sensational piece of cricket, what a magnificent catch."

Former West Indies bowler Ian Bishop tweeted that it will be hard to top Young's catch as the best of 2022, labelling it "exceptional."

Despite the catch, South Africa remains in the box seat, taking their lead beyond 300 at lunch on day four.

New Zealand leads the two-Test series 1-0.
