All first-class cricketers should be compelled to wear helmets when batting in nets or games against pace bowling, a report into the death of Phillip Hughes recommends.

Cricket Australia's review into the death of the former Test batsman also recommends helmets be mandatory for fielders close to the pitch.

But the review, by President of the Australian Bar Association David Curtain QC, stops short of making it compulsory for helmets to have clip-on guards at the rear of the helmet, which became fashionable after Hughes was hit in the neck and killed while batting for South Australia on November 27, 2014.
