Alex Carey pulls off 'unbelievable catch' in Australia's Champions Trophy opener after swapping gloves for outfield

Alex Carey has shown his fielding skills aren't just limited to wicket-keeping after pulling off a catch of the tournament contender in Australia's opening match of the Champions Trophy.

England's opener Phil Salt started the match on fire when he smashed a four and six off the first over from Spencer Johnson.

However, the quickfire innings was over quickly thanks to a moment of brilliance from Carey.

With Josh Inglis taking the gloves, Carey was fielding at mid-on for the second over.

Opener Ben Dwarshuis pitched the ball up to Salt who tried to flick him through mid-on with Carey diving high and taking the ball in his right hand.

"What a catch, that is an unbelievable catch," England great Michael Atherton said on Amazon Prime's coverage.

"Alex Carey, who we normally see behind the stumps with the gloves on, has flung himself to his right and taken a quite superlative catch at mid-on."

Mel Jones noted Inglis was the first to congratulate his fellow keeper.

"He knows as a keeper how tough it is in the field when you're moving between those two positions," she said.

"It had heat on it, he has launched perfectly off the right foot, that is how it's done."

Carey was in the game again in the sixth over, with Jamie Smith punching another Dwarshuis delivery to him, this time for a much simpler catch.

Smith's departure on 15 had England at 2-43 after 5.2 overs.
