Steve Smith's hot streak in vain as Perth Scorchers cruise to record-extending sixth BBL title

A clinical performance with bat and ball has catapulted the Perth Scorchers to a record-extending sixth Big Bash title on Sunday night.

The hosts were at their absolute best against the Sydney Sixers and were never in any danger of losing at Optus Stadium, cruising to a six-wicket win.

After losing the toss and being sent in to bat, things started in dire fashion for the Sixers when opener Daniel Hughes was out for 7 off 10 deliveries.

All eyes were on Steve Smith after his blistering cameo late in the BBL|15 campaign, but the Australian superstar could only muster up 24 off 13 balls in the decider after he was given out lbw to Aaron Hardie following review from the Scorchers.

"Huge moment - that will be a point of much debate," Mark Howard said on Fox Cricket.

His score ended up being the equal-highest for the Sixers, with experienced top-order batters Josh Phillipe and Moises Henriques dismissed for the same total.

Sydney continued to lose wickets regularly throughout their innings and finished all out for 132 after Ben Dwarshuis was run out from the final ball of the 20th over.

Mark Waugh was scathing in his assessment of the Sixers performance with the bat.,

"If they are brutally honest, they have to admit their batting hasn't been particularly good this season," the Aussie great said on commentary for Fox Cricket.

"There haven't been many runs scored aside from Steve Smith."

If the batting display from the men in magenta started poorly, it was even worse with the ball when Mitchell Marsh dispatched Sean Abbott over the rope for six.

"That's the best first-ball shot I've seen," Waugh said.

Rain threatened to delay play around the five-over mark, but the umpires called the players back onto the field before they entered the sheds and the match continued.

Marsh and his opening partner put on 80 runs for the first-wicket partnership before a rare highlight on a tough night for the Sixers.

With the game seemingly out of reach, Jack Edwards took a spectacular diving catch to dismiss Allen for 36 that had the crowd, commentary team and players all stunned.

"Late in the piece with one of the catches of the summer," Howard said.

Hardie was soon out for 5 off as many balls when Abbott snicked him off, giving the Sixers at least a glimmer of hope to pull off a miracle.

But it was the Australian captain in Marsh who stood up with a patient knock off 44 off 43 balls before being caught in the deep by Mitchell Starc.

Josh Inglis (29 not out) finished the job with a six over the bowler's head with 15 balls remaining as the celebrations began for the Scorchers.

"They are by far and away the best team in this competition," Howard said.

Marsh, Inglis and Cooper Connolly will now turn their attention towards Australian duties in the T20 World Cup, which begins on February 7.
