'Sacrificed himself': Renegades survive 'awful' runout as teenager Oliver Peake hits final-ball six to win

Just hours after Jamie Smith's diabolical dismissal in the Ashes, it was over to the Melbourne Renegades to one-up the England wicket-keeper.

And it wasn't the only piece of drama in a Big Bash game that went down to the final ball when one of the country's hottest young stars hit a six to win it.

Early in the side's run chase against the Perth Scorchers on Wednesday night, overseas imports Tim Seifert and Mohammad Rizwan were involved in a horror mix-up.

With the scores at 1-54 in the eighth over and chasing a low total of 128 to win, both batters from the Renegades managed to find themselves at the same end of the pitch as Scorchers captain Ashton Turner earned himself an easy runout.

"No, no, come on," Brendon Julian said on Fox Cricket.

"Rizwan wanted it, he called for it and Seifert just basically turned his back."

After some confusion as to which Renegades player needed to walk, it was Seifert who eventually started trudging off the field at Optus Stadium for 11 off 16.

"I think Tim Seifert has sacrificed himself here - someone's out, it definitely wasn't close," former Australian vice-captain Brad Haddin said.

Shane Watson described it as "awful running" on commentary as Seifert left the field.

Rizwan departed not long after the horror moment and it left the 'Gades in a tricky position with two of their key men back in the dugout.

Enter teenage star Oliver Peake, who stepped up with a match-winning knock, but there was conjecture over whether he should have been dismissed much earlier.

Peake was on 15 when he mistimed a ball to Turner at mid-on and it looked as though a simple catch had been taken, but the third umpire ended up ruling that he had lost control of the ball when he fell to the ground, much to the dismay of the Perth crowd.

The 19-year-old's moment of luck allowed him to take it to the final over, where it was Aaron Hardie bowling at the death to try and help the Scorchers hang on.

He needed a four from the final ball of the match but showed his poise and skill at the same time, hitting an incredible ramp-style shot into the stands for six.

"You could not believe how good a shot that is - what a superstar," Watson said.

Peake finished with 42 off 30 balls to clinch a crucial four-wicket win for his team.

The left-hander has been touted as a future international player and showed exactly the type of clutch ability that would hold him in good stead for Australia.

The victory keeps the Renegades in the hunt for the BBL finals, while the loss for the Scorchers means they will remain behind the Hobart Hurricanes in second spot.
