Test stars among 52 free agents up for grabs as first ever BBL player movement window opens

Australia's Big Bash League enters new territory on Tuesday as the first player movement window opens.

The domestic Twenty20 league has introduced its very own transfer window after 14 seasons of competition.

It is similar to the AFL's trade period that runs for a week and a half at the end of each season, and formalises the movement of players between the eight BBL franchises.

The BBL player movement window will be open for 10 days.

This is what you need to know.

HOW IT WORKS

Each club in the BBL has a list of players contracted for next season, a separate list of eligible free agents, and another list of uncontracted players.

Uncontracted players are not able to be signed during this 10-day window, so remain in limbo for now.

The eligible free agents are up for grabs for all seven clubs who they did not play for this summer.

In total there are 52 eligible free agents currently looking for a home in the BBL who are able to be signed in this window.

The list is not able to include overseas or local replacement payers.

The contracted players are able to be traded between teams if two franchises can strike a deal.

Draft picks are also able to be used in trade deals, as well as the contracted players.

Existing contracts are not able to be adjusted by a franchise during the window.

The player movement window will be open until 5pm on Thursday, February 6 at which time a BBL team is permitted to have a maximum of 12 players contracted.

No other contracting activity can happen until the embargo is lifted in March.
