Perth Scorchers star Mitch Marsh fined $5000 but avoids suspension after extraordinary outburst at umpire

Star Perth Scorchers all-rounder Mitch Marsh has copped a $5000 fine but avoided suspension after his intense outburst at an umpire in last night's BBL clash.

Cricket Australia's decision means the 29-year-old will be available for the Scorchers' do-or-die match on Thursday night, in which they will meet the winner of tonight's fixture between the Sydney Thunder and Brisbane Heat.

Marsh exploded at umpire Sam Nogajski in last night's match against the Sydney Sixers after he was controversially given out caught behind off the bowling of spinner Steve O'Keefe.

O'Keefe and Sixers wicketkeeper Josh Philippe hit the umpire with full-throttle appeals and the official raised his finger, having deemed the bat had tickled the ball as Marsh attempted a leg-side glance.

A dumbfounded Marsh then shouted "no" at the top of his lungs, trudged from the middle, eyeballed the umpire and unleashed a foul-mouthed spray.

The Western Australian was dismissed for two runs in the Scorchers' innings of 6-167 and Perth lost the match by nine wickets.

Marsh took responsibility of his extraordinary tirade.

"I accept the fine handed down to me," Marsh said.

"My reaction to the umpire's decision was unacceptable and not the example I want to be setting for any young cricketer.

"I have complete respect for the umpires and the job they do.

"I'll learn from this and look forward to Thursday night's match."

Replays of the delivery suggested Marsh hadn't hit the ball and reignited calls for Cricket Australia to introduce DRS to the BBL.

"It'll continue the discussion of DRS or lack of in this tournament," Australian cricket legend Adam Gilchrist said on Fox Cricket's coverage.

"I think we have all come to the agreement to use the technology we have got, and in that situation, if it's inconclusive you stay with the on-field umpire's decision."
