Glenn Maxwell has been left dumbfounded after his Melbourne Stars side failed to appeal for a run out that would've been given out.

In the 13th over, Sydney Thunder import Sam Billings hit a Peter Siddle delivery to gully. The throw from Joel Paris then hit the stumps at the bowler's end with an over throw following from the ricochet.

Stars all-rounder Marcus Stoinis could be heard saying "howzat" but only well after the throw. The umpire then appeared to say "do you want me to go up?" Stoinis then said no.

The next ball, Billings hit for six.

Replays then showed Billings should've been run out from the throw.

Stoinis and Siddle were the closest to the stumps and were seen throwing their hands in the air at Paris instead of appealing.

A mic'd up Maxwell then expressed his disbelief.

"You're kidding me," he said on Fox Cricket.

"Why leave that with me? That's awful from you blokes," he laughed.

After his innings of 72, Billings admitted he knew he was out.

"I said to the umpire, because he asked (Siddle) if he wanted to appeal, and he said 'no' ... and he kept on asking, and I said 'you can't keep asking if they don't want to appeal'," he said.

"It felt out. I didn't think he threw it, it was a bit dopey from me but lucky I got away with it."

The Stars again fell short when it mattered most, with the Thunder recording an 18-win run at Manuka Oval.
