Glenn Maxwell has bludgeoned the highest score in Big Bash League history and the second-fastest ton in the tournament ever.

The Melbourne Stars captain reached triple figures off just 41 balls and finished unbeaten on 154 from 64.

Former Adelaide Strikers batter Craig Simmons is the only player to have reached the triple-figure mark faster than Maxwell, having plundered a 39-ball century during the 2013-14 summer.

And Maxwell's 154 eclipsed the previous high set by Stars teammate Marcus Stoinis, who belted an unbeaten 147 in the 2019-20 season.

But the record-breaking heroics didn't end there, with the Stars also eclipsing the record for highest team total in BBL history, as they surged to 2-273 from their 20 overs at the MCG.

The mammoth total topped the previous record of 5-232, registered by the Sydney Thunder during the 2020-21 summer.

Stoinis was not out at the other end as the Stars' innings drew to a close, but so phenomenal was Maxwell's knock that few onlookers would be giving any mention to Stoinis' own brilliant innings.

"What a thrill to witness that," said legendary wicketkeeper-batter Adam Gilchrist on Fox Cricket.

"You always know there's something exciting happening around Glenn Maxwell."

Maxwell smashed 22 fours and four sixes in his otherworldly knock, including a reverse sweep for six that caller Mark Howard labelled "the shot of the summer".

"He's a freak – it's as simple as that," said former England captain Michael Vaughan.

"He makes bowlers shiver with the shots he can play. The power, skill levels. Pure entertainer."

Twitter has exploded in reaction to Maxwell's innings.
