Australia's women's cricket team has had a remarkable winning streak brought to a halt in devastating but thrilling fashion against India in Mackay.

The ODI team had won 26 consecutive matches, dating back to March 2018 but on Sunday night their two-and-a-half year reign ended.

India won on the third last ball of the game and it came as the hammer blow to Australia which had seen three players injured during that one innings.

The Aussies lost both Rachael Haynes and then Beth Mooney to hamstring injuries during their fielding innings.

Spin bowler Sophie Molineux then had a ball thrown from the outfield bounce off the turf and hit her in the face, splitting her lip open badly.

Blood was streaming from Molineux's face and she too was forced off the field, before returning with her head taped up, and she ended up bowling her last three overs.

In the end it was off Molineux that the winning runs were hit, with Jhulan Goswami belting a four back over the bowler's head to complete the victory and end Australia's streak.

India needed eight runs off the last two overs. When Sneh Rana was caught out it was 8-259, needing six off eight balls with two wickets in hand.

Earlier, Beth Mooney (52), Ashleigh Gardner (67) and Tahlia McGrath (47) helped the home side to 9-264.

Shafali Verma (56) and Yastika Bhatia (64) did the job for India before a flurry of late wickets, but it wasn't enough to drag Australia over the line.
