Australia's cricketing future was right in the spotlight during the third ODI against South Africa in Mackay, with Cameron Green and Cooper Connolly starring.

Green smashed Australia's second fastest ever ODI hundred early, with his ton coming off 47 balls.

Then Connolly claimed a five-wicket haul as Australia won by 276 runs. South Africa won the series 2-1.

"South Africa dominated the first two games but Australia have responded with a statement," Kerry O'Keeffe said on Fox Cricket.

Earlier, Travis Head hit his seventh ODI century off 80 balls.

"He'll be extremely happy to get back into form," Mark Waugh said.

Head was dismissed for 142 off 102 balls, after an incredible 250-run opening partnership with Mitchell Marsh who was on 96 at the time.

The West Australian passed the milestone off 105 balls before he was dismissed off his next ball.

Green then went absolutely berserk, bringing up the century off Corbin Bosch's bowling by pushing the ball to mid-wicket for two runs.

The ton was Green's first in the ODI format. Glenn Maxwell holds the fastest for Australia with his coming off 40 balls against the Netherlands in 2023.

Green finished 118 not out as Australia reached 2-431 at the end of 50 overs with Alex Carey also bringing up a half-century.

In response, South Africa's top to middle order crumbled and the score was 4-50 in the ninth over.

Connolly brought up his fifth wicket when he had Keshav Maharaj stumped in the 24th over at 9-154.

The left-hander was brought into the match for the first time this series and originally slated to bat in the middle order.

However, the heroics of the top order meant he wasn't required.

"It's the quirkest of games cricket, he came to bat in the middle order today, didn't get a strike, they've given him a bowl and he's got a (five-wicket haul), outstanding ... well done," O'Keeffe said.

The Proteas were then bowled out for 155 wtih Dewald Brevis top-scoring on 49.

The 276-run lost is South Africa's worst ever in ODI cricket.

Connolly was the man who dismissed Brevis, caught at long-off by Green.

The 22-year-old let him know about it too, sending him off with a bow and arrow celebration.
