'Such an awkward position': Adam Doueihi suffers suspected facial fracture after scary incident

There are real concerns for Wests Tigers star Adam Doueihi after he was forced from the field in a scary moment on Sunday against the Cowboys.

Early in the clash at Leichhardt Oval, the halfback attempted to make a tackle on a rampaging Jason Taumalolo and was immediately left dazed on the turf.

Play was called off straight away by referee Peter Gough as trainers rushed to Doueihi.

Replays showed the 27-year-old had been collected by Taumalolo's knee when going low for his tackle attempt.

"He gets his head on the wrong side here," Andrew Johns said on Nine.

"You don't want to put your head there when you're tackling anyone, let alone Jason Taumalolo. He gets himself in such an awkward position there."

After an extended delay, Doueihi was able to leave the field on his feet with the assistance of Tigers medical staff, sporting a nasty bruise next to his eye.

"No stretcher required, that's a good sign - but he will be out of the game," Brenton Speed on commentary as Doueihi left the field.

Nine's Danika Mason would soon report that Doueihi was deemed to have displayed category two concussion symptoms and could still be a chance of returning.

"That surprises me," Johns said.

It was soon confirmed that Doueihi had failed his HIA and would be leaving the ground in an ambulance with fears he had suffered a fractured cheekbone.

North Queensland opened the scoring through Jeremiah Nanai and soon extended their lead when Semi Valemei crossed in the corner, but the Tigers forced their way back into the contest as mid-season recruit Taylan May bagged a first-half double.

The Cowboys went on to win 34-28.
