Australia vs India second Test, day two AS IT HAPPENED: Greats fume over poor Australian fielding form; Todd Murphy inflicts crucial blow after lunch

Day two in Delhi was probably won by the Australians, although a few key moments are the reason there's any doubt.

When Lyon had Bharat caught by Steve Smith, the hosts were in it up to their necks at 7-139.

Lyon was bowling superbly and it looked as though a wicket could fall with literally any ball.

But Axar Patel and Ravi Ashwin combined beautifully to nearly double the Indian tally for the eighth wicket.

Australia had a couple of chances, but missed catches - they didn't even get hands on them - by Steve Smith and then Matthew Renshaw around the bat probably cost the Aussies a good fifty runs or so.

Those two moments could eventually mean the difference.

Once the Australians got the new ball in their hands though, those last three wickets they had been toiling away at for hours fell quickly.

But Axar and Ashwin had well and truly done their jobs though - what the Australians will feel should have been a hefty first innings lead, was just a single run.

Matthew Renshaw was the man brought into the team to replace David Warner under concussion protocols, but Travis Head was the man asked to open the Australian innings alongside Usman Khawaja.

As it turns out, it's the first time Head had opened an innings in top level cricket - he had never done it in his first class career.

But any inexperience he may have been carrying, he hid by playing confident, aggressive cricket.

On several occasions he took on Jadeja and Ashwin, who so far in this series have well and truly had the measure of the Australian side.

When Usman Khawaja was brilliantly caught, it brought Marnus Labuschagne to the crease, who seemed intent to follow Head's aggressive lead.

The pair guided Australia to stumps, and will resume tomorrow at 1-61 with a lead of 62.

That's the end of day two in Delhi, with Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne unbeaten at the crease.

Australia undoubtedly win the third session of the day, despite the earlier misses from Smith and Renshaw.

Travis Head - opening the batting for the first time not only for his country, but he's never done it in first class cricket either - came out with intent and has guided Australia to a 62-run lead in the second innings.

In just the tenth over, Australia have bought up the fifty.

Labuschagne has come out and is looking to follow Travis Head's aggressive lead - he's already 14 at better than a run a ball.

Commentators are saying it looks as though the Aussies have made some tweaks to the way they're gripping the bat, which appears to be helping them adjust quickly to any irregular bounce.

Australia will be aiming for 250 at a minimum to feel like they've set a good target for India.

Usman Khawaja is the first Australian wicket, caught at leg-slip playing a padel sweep against Ravi Jadeja.

The moment Jadeja released the ball, Khawaja was shaping up to play the shot, and Shreyas Iyer anticipated the shot perfectly.

He moved slightly to his left, and took the catch clean as you would like on his chest.

Khawaja looks almost impressed to be dismissed in such a way. Almost.

Khawaja was brilliant in Australia's first innings, and he'll be disappointed with that.

It was a bit of a nothing shot, if he'd have played a more traditional sweep rather than just using a dead bat to use the pace of the ball, he might have got it finer, which would've likely brought him a boundary down to fine leg.

Head down the other end is still looking busy and scoring quickly. He's raced to 22 at nearly a run a ball. He's joined by Marnus Labuschagne.

In his first time opening the batting in top-level cricket, Travis Head is off to a flying start.

He's playing aggressively, much in the same way David Warner tries to do.

He's raced to 16 off his first 19 balls.

Down the other end, Khawaja is patient and watching, and if Head is going to be aggressive down the other end, he will probably look to just hold down his end and rotate the strike.

After Ashwin and Shami bowled the first few overs, Ravi Jadeja is now into the attack.

Matthew Renshaw was brought into the team to replace David Warner through concussion protocols, but it's Travis Head who's walked out to open alongside Usman Khawaja.

The move will no doubt be to ensure the Aussies open with a left-right combination rather than two right handers.

Ashwin has the new ball.

Shami wanted to blast Kuhnemann out of the stadium. Instead his castle is rearranged and the Indian innings is over!

The deficit ... just one run. Australia will be disappointed with that.

Axar Patel and Ravi Ashwin were sensational, and they alone are the reason I think India have their nose in front in this Test.

They will take a lot out of that batting partnership alone.

Australia will need to come out proactively. Usman Khawaja is one opener, will he be joined by Matthew Renshaw? We'll shortly find out.

An over after losing his batting partner, Axar Patel falls to another brilliant catch.

Well for all the criticisms of Australia's fielding earlier, they've been on it the past over or two.

Patel clobbered Murphy for six, then two balls later he tries to do it again, but smokes one to Cummins, who takes a great catch at mid-on.

The ball was travelling, and it didn't look like the skipper picked it up at all, but he managed to hold on.

It means Siraj joins Shami at the centre.

Neither are known for their batting prowess. India trail by just three runs. Can they hang around long enough to get their nose in front?

When Axar Patel and Ravi Ashwin came together, India were 7-139 and the deficit 124.

India are now 252 and the deficit 11.

Axar and Ashwin have been superb in steadying the Indian ship, and they'll be looking to kick on until stumps.

Having said that, Australia have taken the second new ball immediately, and Pat Cummins has brought himself on to bowl.

Two hours ago, Australia were still in the box seat, but the momentum is firmly in the Indian camp now.

Even if the last three Indian wickets fall quickly, the hosts will be rapt with this first innings performance, particularly that of these two batters.

Although as I say that Ravi Ashwin falls!

The second ball of Cummins over with the new ruck, Ashwin chips one onto the leg side where Renshaw takes a good catch.

Ashwin falls for 37.
