STUMPS DAY 2: Travis Head belts incredible century as England woes continue with pair injured

Australia will take a 196-run lead into Day 3 of the first Ashes Test at the Gabba.

The Aussies began their batting innings on Day 2, having bowled England out for 147 before bad light stopped play on the first day of the series.

Marcus Harris fell cheaply for 3, but then David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne put on 156 together. Labuschagne was out for 74 and then Warner was out for 94.

Steve Smith was out relatively cheaply for 12, while Cameron Green was bowled for a golden duck.

The Aussies lost 4-29 in a disastrous period and England suddenly seemed on top of the match, having been well behind before that.

Then Travis Head came to the crease, and belted an extraordinary century. He made it to stumps on 112 off 95 balls, including 12 fours and two sixes.

He will resume with Mitchell Starc (10) and the Aussies on 7-343.

There could be more trouble for embattled England, after Ben Stokes and Ollie Robinson appeared to get injured on Day 2.

Both finished the day but looked uncomfortable, and there's still three days left.

It's all happening out in the middle for Travis Head.

Soon after reaching his century, England bowler Mark Wood accidentally nailed the batter with a full toss.

Head reared back as the ball smashed into his torso and under his chin, then dropped to the ground.

Luckily, Head got up smiling and passed all tests to resume batting.

Wood can receive a warning, and if he does it a second time can be forced out of the attack by the umpires.

Dropped last summer and was in a battle with Usman Khawaja to bat No.5 for Australia in this series, but he eventually won the spot.

In his first innings back in the team he scored a ton off 85 balls to take the Test away from England.

The tourists were on top at one stage after taking 4-29 in quick time, but Head belted 12 fours and two sixes on his way to triple figures.

Australia's new captain Pat Cummins eventually fell to England skipper, Joe Root.

Cummins made 12 off 27 balls before turning a Root delivery around his legs and being caught by a well-placed leg slip.

It brings Mitchell Starc to the crease.

Things have gone from bad to worse for England.

After Ben Stokes looked to be injured just before lunch, but played on, their strike paceman Ollie Robinson left the field in the last session of the day.

Robinson looked to pull up lame while bowling, but finished his over before trudging off the field with his head down.

Meanwhile, Travis Head continued his assault, belting two fours and a six to race towards triple figures.

Comeback kid Travis Head brought up his half century in 51 balls.

He had some luck and looked a little streaky early on, but belted seven 4s and a 6 on his way to the half ton.

Head was dropped last summer but beat Usman Khawaja to the No.5 spot for the Ashes.

Australian debutant Alex Carey is out for 12 in his first Test innings.

Carey hit a Chris Woakes delivery to mid-wicket and the catch was taken by Ollie Pope.

It brings captain Pat Cummins to the crease.

Head whacked three fours in a single over to put the pressure back on England, while Carey looks solid on his Test debut.

David Warner was only six runs away from another Test century, then scooped an Ollie Robinson ball to cover and was out for 94.

Warner had previously survived three chances - bowled off a no-ball, then dropped at third slip, then almost run out.

The very next ball after his dismissal, Robinson bowled Cameron Green for a golden duck.

The Aussies lost 4-29 and Shane Warne declared - "the Ashes has come alive!".
