Shaquille O'Neal may have dominated the courts with the Los Angeles Lakers but he is returning to take a different leap in the sporting world, this time inside the boxing ring.

O'Neal has accepted to step into the ring against Charles 'Charlie Mack' Alston, a prominent figure in the Philadelphia music scene.

Mack insisted the fight would be an entertaining way to settle the pairs long-standing feud that dates back to a meet-and-greet in Dallas several years ago.

In a video posted to Celebrity Boxing's Instagram, Alston called out the NBA legend.

"Hey listen, I am making an open call to Shaquille O'Neal," he said.

"He came to an autograph signing in Dallas and tried to jump to the front of the line. I chopped him in his neck and told him to get back.

"I'm giving you an opportunity to settle the difference. Me and you, baby, super heavyweight. You're going to be knocked out ... I'm gonna call you 'Sha-knocked out'."

O'Neal wasted no time making his decision, replying "let's do it" in the comments.

The 216cm NBA Hall of Famer then released an acceptance video to his Instagram.

"You did chop me in the neck, Charlie Mack, that is why I talk so funny.

"Payback time. You name the time and place, I will be there.

"You better check my police record Charlie Mack."

No further details have been revealed on how the fight will take place but if it is to go ahead, it will not be the first time O'Neal has stepped in the ring.

O'Neal fought both Oscar De La Hoya and Shane Mosley in exhibition matches in 2009 and 2010 respectively, losing on both occasions.
