Stephen Curry had 52 points, including 12 three-pointers, as the Golden State Warriors held on for a 134-125 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday (AEDT).

Curry was 16 of 31 from the field, making 12 of his 20 shots from distance, the dozen three-pointers matching his season high.

Curry was unstoppable in the first half, hitting his first five shots, including four from outside the arc. He had 32 points in the half, going 11 of 16 from the field and 8 of 10 from outside the arc. After Curry's last three-pointer in the half, coach Steve Kerr just turned and shook his head in disbelief.

"That was a special performance from a special player," teammate Moses Moody said post-match.

Curry now has 15 50-point games, one more than LeBron James on 14.

Curry's score line of 52 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists marked the first time a Golden State player hit those marks since Rick Barry (64 points, 10 rebounds, nine assists) against Portland on March 26, 1974.

As part of Curry's night, he also passed Jerry West and moved into 25th place on the all-time NBA scorer's list.

"I got a little emotional about that," Curry said of passing West. "It was special. In his memory. What he meant to our organisation, the league, to the world of basketball. ... That's the logo."

Warriors coach Kerr characterised Curry's performance as "incredible". Kerr, who has seen plenty of Curry's spectacular nights couldn't believe one shot in the second quarter, turning away from the court in disbelief.

"Fifty-two points with people draped all over him, all game long," Kerr said, later adding: "I've been watching this for 11 years, and actually longer before I became his coach. ... You get a real sense of just the magnitude of his talent.

"The guy is amazing to watch."

But as special as the night was, long-time teammate Draymond Green put it in perspective when asked if it was Curry's best game. "Hell, no. No chance," he said. "I've played with him for 15 years. I can't quite recall the best one off the top of my head, but that ain't it."

Fellow teammate Jimmy Butler scored 27 points, and Green had 13 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists as the Warriors moved into fifth place in the Western Conference.

Ja Morant led Memphis with 36 points and six assists, and Jaren Jackson Jr. finished with 22 points. Zach Edey had 10 points and 16 rebounds as Memphis dropped its third straight game.

The win allowed Golden State to overtake Memphis for fifth place and the Warriors have made their move by going 3-2 on a road trip. It was a two-fold move since the Warriors had a 3-1 lead in the season series.

Memphis' freefall in the standings continues and has it teetering at the play-in game line.

From February 2-19, Memphis was second in the conference and still held the spot at the end of the month.

Golden State ends its six-game road trip in Los Angeles against the Lakers on Friday. The Grizzlies start a three-game road trip against Eastern Conference opponents, traveling to Miami also on Friday.
