'You're not captain anymore': McGuire calls for Eagles to 'stand for something' in Allen saga

Former Collingwood president Eddie McGuire says he would strip Oscar Allen of the captaincy if he was in West Coast's shoes.

Allen met with Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell on Monday, following the club's loss to Fremantle on Sunday evening.

The 26-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season, and had previously been linked with a move to Brisbane.

It's also not the first time the Hawks have done this either, meeting with former Eagle Tom Barrass this time last year before ultimately luring him in the trade period.

McGuire called for West Coast to put their foot down and "stand for something".

"It's a really hard one ... these things happen, but I really feel hard about this, and I said this last week, if Oscar Allen is not fair dinkum, don't be the captain, that's okay," McGuire told Nine's Footy Classified.

"At this stage, West Coast has got to stand for something. If Hawthorn is going to fly in, laugh at them, have breakfast with their captain, take his mind off the job after he didn't get a kick on the weekend and they are absolutely looking like a club that stands for nothing at the moment, then somebody has got to do something."

West Coast CEO Don Pyke admitted this situation is all part of the 'new world' of player movement.

"I think we're working in a world now that's changed from times gone past," Pyke told SEN.

"I don't think it's unusual for clubs to meet with players and that is the case, then clearly we'll keep talking with Oscar about his position at the club.

"We'd love to obviously keep him here and we're working towards that with him and his management. It came to bear overnight, I guess, and we'll work through that as we do with everything."

When pressed on how he would have handled the situation if he was in Pyke's shoes, McGuire says he would have stripped Allen of the captaincy immediately.

"I would have said 'mate, you're not captain anymore'," McGuire stated.

"He should hand in his (captaincy). Or sign a new contract and get it done.

"If it was Billy the goose meeting with Hawthorn, you don't care. The captaincy changes things."

Former Adelaide captain Rory Sloane put himself in Allen's shoes.

"It would be awkward for Oscar inside the four walls right now. He would have to get in front of that group and apologise," he said.

"It is disrespectful because he's captain."

Nine reporter Tom Morris confirmed that the Eagles currently have no plans to discipline Allen for meeting with the Hawks.

West Coast must now focus on the enormous task of travelling to Engie Stadium to face GWS on Saturday afternoon.
