A quiet entry into a Queensland athletics meet has seen Gout Gout come within milliseconds of making Australian history with his latest blistering run.

The teenage sprint sensation lined up at the Dane Bird-Smith Shield Meet on Saturday and clocked the fastest legal time on Australian soil with a time of 10.00 (+0.9 wind).

Gout's participation in the meet was kept under the radar until the day of competition, with Wide World of Sports understanding he did not enter the meet until this week.

Nevertheless, all watching on in the stands were left in awe of what they witnessed.

Running in lane one, it only took a matter of metres for Gout, 18, to find the lead over his rivals before he eventually continued to power over to the finish line in style.

Gout Gout, at 16 and in year 11, signed a deal with Adidas reportedly worth $6 million that runs through to the Brisbane 2032 Olympics.

The race marked the first qualifying performance he had raced in for the World Athletics Under 20 Championships.

The time not only caught the attention of all in the stands, but also the Australian athletics community, as Gout had broken an eight-year-old U20 Oceanic record.

Set by Jake Doran in 2018 with a time of 10.15 (+1.5 wind), Gout shaved 0.15 of a second off that time with his remarkable display.

"It was only a matter of time," Doran wrote on Instagram of Gout's run.

"Proud it took someone of Gout's calibre to eclipse my mark."

The only other Australian who has run a legal 10.00 is Lachlan Kennedy, who did so with a +0.9 wind at the 2025 Australian championships.

Still, the pace only confirms that it is a matter of time until Gout officially breaks the 10-second barrier.

Gout did record two times under the 10-second mark in April last year, although both times of 9.99 were recorded with wind assistance over 2.5m/s. The legal limit is 2m/s.

As for now, Gout's focus is on the world under-20 championships, having opted in favour of competing at that meet over the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
