Disgraced former AFL player Tarryn Thomas begins two week trial with new club in bid to revive career

Tarryn Thomas' pursuit to revive his professional football career could be nearing its end as the disgraced former AFL player was spotted training with a Perth based club.

Having been rejected by all available options in the VFL, Thomas touched down in Perth on Monday in a bid to secure a career lifeline with Swan Districts.

Club officials watched on as the 24-year-old hit the training field in what was the first day of his two-week trial with the team.

Swan Districts is no stranger to providing disgraced stars with career lifelines having also given opportunities to Andrew Krakouer and Sydney Stack.

Swan Districts CEO Jeff Dennis acknowledged the team's reputation as a "second-chance club" but insisted no decision had been made on Thomas.

"First of all, I just want to make it clear that at no time would we condone what Tarryn has done," Dennis said on Wide World of Sports 6PR radio.

"We treat (the situation) very seriously and as unacceptable behaviour.

"By no means are we dismissing it but we also feel that sometimes when people are at such a low point for such a long time, especially young people, sometimes they need some help up to reset and reconnect.

"We feel that is a role we could play but we are still yet to make that decision.

"The whole purpose of bringing Tarryn over was a part of our due diligence to find out a little bit more straight from him about what happened and also get a sense for here's how remorseful he is and whether he is genuinely committed to change.

"Once we find out all this information, we need to consider if we as a club have the capacity and resources to actually help him and provide what he needs to continue to change."

Dennis admitted that the decision to recruit Thomas has yet to be given the green light and will take time.

Thomas was handed an 18-game ban and kicked out of the AFL indefinitely last year - after being sacked by North Melbourne - following several allegations of acting inappropriately towards women.

In 2023 he was also charged with threatening to distribute an intimate image.

Given the nature of Thomas' situation, Dennis insisted that those involved in all aspects of the club will be consulted to ensure they feel safe and cared for.

"We will be addressing [the circumstances] before we make a decision to take on that task," he said.

"They're conversations we'll continue to have internally within the Swans family. Those values are very, very high to us.

"We will leave no stone unturned to make sure nothing is compromised. Safety at any level at any level in our club is absolutely paramount.

"We have established quite a lot of programs to ensure that people to feel like they are safe and cared for within our club."

While the club's interest remains a promising sign for Thomas, his eligibility to register with the club remains in the hands of WA football.

It is expected a decision will be made by this weekend on whether they will give Thomas the green light to register with a club in the state's league.
