Giants defender Connor Idun inks mega extension to become one of the longest-contracted AFL players

GWS defender Connor Idun has signed a six-year extension to become one of the longest-contracted players in the AFL.

Idun was already locked in with the Giants until the end of 2026, but the 24-year-old is now tied with the Sydney club until the end of 2032.

His extension has made him one of six AFL players contracted until 2032, along with GWS teammate Sam Taylor, Port Adelaide skipper Connor Rozee, St Kilda's Max King, Richmond's Noah Balta and the Western Bulldogs' Aaron Naughton.

Fremantle midfielder Hayden Young owns the longest contract in the AFL, having committed to the Dockers until 2033 during the pre-season.

Gold Coast's Mac Andrew is contracted until 2030 and could trigger a clause that extends his deal to 2034.

Idun has recommitted three days after it was revealed by 9News' Tom Morris that GWS midfielder Finn Callaghan had penned a fresh four-year deal to link himself with the club until 2029.

"It's really exciting to have Connor make such a long-term commitment to the club," said GWS footy boss Jason McCartney.

"He's an exceptional young footballer and an exceptional young leader who has continued to get better every year, and at just 24 years old it's exciting that his best is well and truly still to come.

"Connor has proven himself to be one of our most reliable and consistent players and he really provides our backline with great flexibility. After coming off a career-best year we're really excited about what he can produce not only this year but well into the future."

Idun is a member of the Giants' leadership group, which also consists of captain Toby Greene, vice-captains Stephen Coniglio and Josh Kelly, as well as Taylor, Tom Green, Brent Daniels and Jack Buckley.

"We've built a great club that we know our players love and Connor's commitment to the club alongside Finn Callaghan's recent re-signing is further testament to the amazing culture that we have at the Giants," McCartney added.

Idun was born in London to a Ghanian father and an Australian mother, before moving to Australia as a young kid.

He's played 93 AFL games since being drafted by the Giants in 2018.

GWS will begin its premiership campaign in a game against Collingwood at Sydney Olympic Park on March 9.
