Daniel McStay suffers third knee injury in two years after fall against Essendon

Daniel McStay's horrid run with injury has continued after Collingwood confirmed he suffered a medial collateral ligament strain against Essendon on Anzac Day.

McStay was subbed out of the game in the third quarter after he chased the ball back into the goal square. The 29-year-old fell to the ground before reaching the pack and clutched at his left knee.

In a statement, the Magpies described it as a "disappointing setback".

"Unfortunately, scans confirmed this morning that Dan has sustained a moderate grade MCL injury during yesterday's Anzac Day match against Essendon," Collingwood's general manager of football, Charlie Gardiner said.

"The injury is expected to see him out of the game for the next six to eight weeks

"This is obviously a disappointing setback for Dan who has been in good form and has played a really important role for the team so far this season.

"Dan is an absolute professional and has shown a remarkable ability to bounce back from injury and setbacks across his career so we are confident he'll play an important role for us in the second half of the season."

McStay previously suffered an MCL injury to his right knee in 2023 which ruled him out of the grand final.

He also ruptured his ACL on his left knee that same year but returned in the back end of 2024 to play five matches.
