James Hird has rubbished a claim that Charlie Curnow is still happy at Carlton despite the club having to sternly tell the forward he is not for sale, following revelations he's seeking to leave for the Gold Coast.

The 28-year-old is contracted to the Blues until the end of 2029 but it hasn't stopped him and his management testing the waters for a move.

"This is based around lifestyle, living in Melbourne in the football bubble and getting out of the spotlight in Melbourne," 9News Melbourne's Tom Morris said.

"Carlton knows this, they've told him in the last couple of weeks he's not for sale ... they (the Suns) haven't chased Curnow but they're aware of his interest in them."

Blues incoming chief executive Graham Wright met with Curnow's management and conveyed that the key forward is a required player.

Despite the desire to move, Curnow isn't said to be unhappy with the Blues.

Morris said Curnow wasn't "kicking the door down" to leave but had "clearly been pondering what life in Queensland would look like".

Hird wasn't buying it.

"That's rubbish, if he loved being at Carlton and he thought it was a great environment and he wanted to be there then he would want to stay," he said on Nine's Footy Classified.

"You can't say, 'I want to play at another club" if you're really happy.

"I just find that remarkable that he doesn't have a problem with Carlton."

Rory Sloane said the Gold Coast should have targeted Curnow earlier in his career considering his love of surfing. Curnow went at pick 12 in the 2015 draft while the Suns took Callum Ah Chee at pick 8. Ah Chee is now at the Lions.

Curnow has won two Coleman Medals throughout his career.
