Richmond Tigers legend Dustin Martin could be set for a shock retirement backflip, but not with his former club.

The Gold Coast Suns, coached by his former mentor Damien Hardwick, have confirmed Martin has reached out to the club about a possible comeback.

Martin retired immediately at the end of the season after Richmond finished last, with speculation rife throughout the year that he could reunite with Hardwick.

Now the Suns have confirmed Martin's interest in returning to the sport.

"We can confirm that Dustin has had a conversation with the club and we will both be engaging in further conversations to work out whether it's a good fit for the Gold Coast Suns and for Dustin," Suns football boss Wayne Campbell told The Age.

According to The Age, Martin and the Suns had discussed a two-year deal earlier in the season.

In typical Martin style, the 33-year-old announced his retirement without a press conference or farewell.

Martin won three premierships at Richmond in 2017, 2019 and 2020, all under Hardwick.
