'I think it has': Meet the tap dancer set to join the No.1 AFL draft pick club

Meet the tap dancer poised to be taken with pick one in the AFL draft on Wednesday night — the multi-talented Willem Duursma.

Armed with their second No.1 draft pick in three years, the West Coast Eagles are all but certain to swoop on the nimble-footed 18-year-old from the small town of Foster in country Victoria.

Willem's mother Susie runs a dance school in Gippsland's south and she managed this year to rope in her son for a reimagined version of Disney's Tangled, in which the young gun acted as Flynn Rider only last week.

And that's not the only fascinating fact about the wonderful Willem: his brothers, Xavier and Zane, play in the AFL for Essendon and North Melbourne respectively, while his sister, Yasmin, plays in the AFLW for Carlton.

Asked on Nine's Today on Tuesday if his tap dancing helped his "fancy footwork" on the football field, Willem replied with a chuckle.

"If you ask my mum, she reckons it definitely did," Willem said.

"I think it has. Being a tall midfielder you've got to be able to move well with the small blokes you go against."

Willem, a product of the Foster Tigers, Gippsland Power and Victoria Country, is a 193-centimetre utility capable of taking intercept marks at half-back, winning the ball in the midfield and doing damage as a forward.

He claimed All-Australian honours and Victoria Country's MVP award at under-16 level, then repeated the double in the under-18s this year.

He has no qualms about the highly likely prospect of making the west his home.

"[Being] a country boy you're already living three hours away from the city [of Melbourne], so you've got to move regardless, [and] whether it's Perth, whether it's Melbourne or anywhere, I'm ready to go," Willem said.

"You love the game you play, you love your footy, and wherever it takes you, you just enjoy the journey."

It was another young gun from country Victoria who landed at West Coast via pick one in the 2023 draft — midfield bull Harley Reid.

The Tongala product is the face of the Eagles in their slow, agonising and historically diabolical rebuild.

"It definitely would be really special to try and help West Coast ... [become] pretty good again," Willem said.

"I feel really good [heading into the draft]. You've worked so hard throughout all the years and it finally starts to feel real. That's the beauty of the moment that we have in this draft position. I'm really excited [to] hopefully get picked up tonight, get to a club and getting going."

The Eagles also hold selection two in this year's draft, which they received as a compensation pick from the AFL after co-captain Oscar Allen's departure to Brisbane.
