Rowell explains why he eats grass

Matt Rowell admitted on the podium that growing up, he was a bit of a footy nerd.

"A bit of a weirdo," he said.

But that's not his weirdest act that's been captured. The weirdest was probably when he was spotted eating grass pre-game.

That came up during his time on the podium.

"There is another reason why I am a weirdo," he said.

"I started doing that a few years ago. You try a lot of weird things and that was kind of like a grounding process that I wanted to do before games. Feel, sight, taste obviously.

"Those are the kind of things that you do. I was playing in Darwin in a game a few years ago and they said, 'we saw you eat the grass before the game but it goes through the sewerage, you might want to check that nothing is wrong with you after this'.

"That was a bit of a strange one."

Rowell pays tribute to his best mate

Lachlan Harper

Matt Rowell and Noah Anderson grew up playing football together, and now they're together at the Suns.

"It is kind of cool going through the whole journey with him," Rowell said of Anderson.

"I think I might have pinched a few votes off him that he should have got. Just to go through the whole journey which with him and go to Carey and to be drafted together was cool. It made it a lot easier I guess to transition into the AFL.

"I love playing with him but I love him as a mate as well. That friendship means a lot to me and it is not very often that you get to go to an AFL club with your best mate. We went through that journey together, like winning the premiership in Year 12. We would love to do that at an AFL club. I think we have taken big strides in that this year. I love playing with him and I love him as a bloke."

The camera then panned to Anderson who raised his glass to Rowell and finished it off.

You can tell Matt Rowell is truly lost for words on the podium.

Asked if he expected it at all, Rowell was candid.

"I came in tonight and was just happy to be one of the contenders tonight," he said.

"I didn't think I would win. It's amazing to be standing up here, I'm pretty speechless, as you can probably tell."

"Need to get some words going here," he added with a nervous smile.
