Brisbane will be sweating on the scans to young star Cameron Rayner who went down with a suspected ACL injury during the Lions' pre-season hit out against the Gold Coast Suns.

Rayner was attempting to smother a handball during the second quarter when he landed awkwardly and immediately grabbed for his knee.

The 21-year-old former No.1 draft pick was reduced to tears as he struggled to get up off the turf, with the club's trainers forced to help him walk to the changerooms.

Rayner will go for scans tomorrow where it's expected an ACL injury will be revealed.

"He's distraught … I reckon he knows," Hawthorn legend Dermott Brereton told Fox Footy.

Brisbane Lions great Alastair Lynch added: "He's a young star around the club.

"They've been so happy with the way he's progressed through the pre-season.

"The plan is, as we saw last week in the practice match and through the pre-season, big minutes in the midfield – and he's been doing extremely well.

"Fingers crossed the assessment that'll be done shortly and the scans that'll no doubt be done tomorrow is a positive one."

Rayner has played 63 games for Brisbane to date since making his debut back in 2018.
