Gamers to get their first major look at GTA VI in upcoming Netflix special

Millions of gamers have been waiting for Rockstar Games to drop more news on Grand Theft Auto VI, but I don’t think anyone had “Netflix special” on their bingo card.

Rockstar has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look will premiere on Netflix; this is expected to be our first proper look at the game ahead of its November release.

What we’ll actually see is still anyone’s guess. Actual gameplay feels like a safe bet, along with a deeper look at Vice City, new mechanics, and hopefully a few extra surprises before launch.

The interesting part is the Netflix deal itself. We have never seen this sort of thing before — but it’s Rockstar, and they’re not known for doing things in a traditional manner.

Netflix called it a “first-of-its-kind partnership” with Rockstar.

Grand Theft Auto reveals have become cultural moments in their own right. The anticipation and fandom around Grand Theft Auto VI is unprecedented, and we’re honoured that Rockstar Games has partnered with us to debut the next part of the Grand Theft Auto story with Netflix members first,” Netflix nonfiction series vice president Brandon Riegg said, in a statement.

“It’s a reflection of what we hope Netflix is becoming: a place where the most ambitious storytelling, from any medium, can find the biggest possible audience.”

The streaming giant said the “collaboration represents the next generation of storytelling and content on Netflix”.

It’s easy to imagine Netflix paying tens of millions of dollars for an event of this magnitude. Even if it’s only exclusive for a moment (no doubt it’ll be livestreamed and re-uploaded everywhere), the marketing value of getting millions of GTA fans to open Netflix is mega.

The first trailer for the game was shared on YouTube in December 2023 and amassed more than 288 million views. A second trailer released in May last year, ticked over more than 176.8 million views

To put the new Netflix deal in perspective, promoting a game through the biggest streaming service in the world is like the unveiling of the next iPhone. It’s like Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour on Disney+ but for gamers. This is a major event.

When can I watch Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look?

Aussies, you’ll want to set an early alarm. The Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look will stream on Netflix at 5am AEST on Friday, August 28.

Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
