Whether you love them or hate them, Tabis are well and truly dominating the fashion space – and they have been for quite some time.
The divisive style features a distinctive split-toe design that separates the big toe from the rest; it’s quite hoof-like in appearance, but continues to dominate everywhere from high-fashion to high-street brands.
The style originated in 15th-century Japan, with the traditional split-toe socks called tabi. In the 1920s, labourers adopted the jika-tabi, a rubber-soled outdoor work boot designed for grip and balance. It was only in 1989 that designer Maison Margiela debuted the style on the runway, turning it into the footwear sensation it is today.
