Has your FYP ever served you content of fit-looking people running around shirtless, sweating profusely on a rower, doing burpees or throwing wallballs around? If so, you might be familiar with Hyrox.

We've done a couple of races in our time, so ahead of the Melbourne races taking place December 11-14, we want to share our favourite gear that will have you smashing Hyrox like a pro.

What is Hyrox?

Hyrox is a global indoor fitness competition that combines eight kilometres of running and eight functional workout stations, alternating between running and functional exercises. With affiliate gyms and races from Sydney to New York to London, the sport has developed a passionate fanbase.

It bills itself as "a sport for everybody", so don't be put off by the shredded six packs and bulging muscles you've seen on socials. As someone in the fitness community, I can safely say anyone and everyone can give it a go.

Are there races in Australia?

Yes! In Sydney, they took place in July this year, and in Melbourne, they are happening this weekend (December 11-14).

Hyrox Brisbane will take place April 9-12, 2026, before another Australian season begins.

Tempted? Well then, here's some gear you might need to kick-start your Hyrox journey.

A decent shoe

First things first, you're going to need a decent shoe that can withstand all the running and functional movements. Don't worry, you won't need all carbon-plated, neon, speed demon stuff (unless you're going full-throttle, then by all means) – just something decent and reliable.

I currently use the Asics Novablast 5s. They're a lightweight, bouncy, energised trainer for uptempo paces, light intervals and short distances on race day.
