Yoga teacher, 23, dies after falling from mountain on sunrise hike

A British yoga teacher has died after falling from a Guatemalan mountain after taking her clothes off for a sunrise hike.

Catherine Shaw, 23, was found naked at the top of a hiking track six days after she was reported missing in March 2019.

An inquest into her death heard she left her hotel on the fifth of March with her puppy to go on a hike.

The yoga teacher, from Witney, Oxfordshire, had removed her clothes as she made her way along the trail.

Coroner Darren Salter said she had been dead from "multiple injuries" for about four to six days after the fall and her death wasn't suspicious, ruling it an accident.

He told the courts there was  "no evidence of any suspicious circumstances or third part involvement".

Police initially instigated a theory that she may have been murdered, but a statement released by the Lucie Blackman Trust on the family's behalf read "due to her lack of intake of food and fluid may have passed out or fallen, causing the wounds to her body".

Her father, Tarquin, said she was "comfortable in her own skin" and that she had travelled to places before "where nudity was accepted".

Friends said is was also normal for Catherine to hike early to watch the sunrise and that before she disappeared she had been on a spiritual quest. She had been fasting in the leading up to the hike

Search parties looking for Catherine found her puppy "shivering and alone" and her jacket close by before finding the body of the 23-year-old.
