But before she passed, Phedre Fitton decided to play one last prank on her unsuspecting husband, Nigel Fitton.

One of her last requests was that her husband remember to water the plants in the couple’s bathroom.

The devoted husband ensured he kept his word and faithfully watered them.

A few years later, Mr Fitton decided to move into a retirement home and Nicol flew back to South Africa from London to help him.

It was then that they realised the plants were plastic.

“We all thought it was so hilarious and my dad said: ‘No wonder they look so good still!’. My mum never discussed the prank at all,” she tells 9Honey.

But Nicol tells 9Honey that her mum always had a great sense of humour.

“When she lost her hair, she would march into the hairdressers and point to her bald scalp and say loudly, ‘What have you done to my hair?’ just to see the reaction of the other customers having their hair done,” Nicol tells 9Honey.

Nicol, now a firefighter in London, shared her funny story through Twitter and revealed that it was nice to get a laugh all these years on.

In good spirits, Mr Fitton posed for Nicol pretending to water the plants so she could share that photo to her newly-found Twitter fans.

If you’re wondering, yes, Mr Fitton still has the plants in pride of place in the retirement home, but he no longer waters them.
