Dating isn't for the faint-hearted, but one woman has been left completely despondent after receiving cruel messages after joining the app Hinge.

Kate Langley was encouraged by friends to join the dating app, with many telling her the best singles could be found on there.

She set up her Hinge profile complete with flattering photo.

She quickly received an insult followed by a compliment. TikTok

One of the first messages she received read: "Your eyes are so far apart, you look weird and funny."

The man then added: "But also nice at the same time with that smile."

Langley shared her experience on TikTok, sharing a screenshot of the message in a video along with the description: "Is this negging or an insecure man?"

Negging is the term used to describe an act of emotional manipulation whereby a person makes a deliberate backhanded compliment or otherwise flirtatious remark to another person to undermine their confidence and increase their need of the manipulator's approval.

Her experience on Hinge hasn't gone as well as she would have liked. TikTok

She added in the caption: "When my friends tell me hinge has the best people when in fact it has the worst men ever???"

Her TikTok followers were quick to reassure her, with one writing: "Your eyes are stunning! Eyes that are unusually distanced apart are really striking, like Anya Taylor Joy's."

"Definitely someone using negging instead of having a personality," added another.

Hinge is an app that promotes itself as fostering long-term relationships only. While Langley's experience so far hasn't been ideal, many of the dating app users have found lasting love.

Let's hope Langley makes good use of the dating app's features which allow her to curate her experience to ensure she is contacted by nice guys only.
